Taking up two whole blocks, this building is both massive and imposing... which if you think about it, kind of makes sense given that it's occupied by the federal government. In New York, you can find some of the best examples of post-war residential architecture in buildings like the white brick Manhattan House... You can also find some of the worst, like this... 300 W 55th St (which is actually on 8th Avenue) ... a big box that's never been washed. Maybe this would have looked good in Las Vegas or Macau... but New York City? Not so much... This building is located right across the street from the historic Seaport district in Lower Manhattan. I know there's constructivist architecture and there's deconstructivist architecture... Apparently now there's also under-constructivist architecture. Luna Park Houses (the Luna Park Housing Corporation) is a complex of five hi-rise Mitchell-Lama apartment buildings overlooking Coney Island. Department store Century 21's flagship location in Lower Manhattan... Nothing in downtown Newark or on Fulton St in Brooklyn even looks as messy as this. Yet could you believe that this is only one block away from the World Trade Center site? |
