Luna Park Houses (the Luna Park Housing Corporation) is a complex of five hi-rise Mitchell-Lama apartment buildings overlooking Coney Island.
It was completed in 1961 [1] around the site of the old Luna Park amusement park, which burned down in 1944 [2].
Designed by Kelly & Gruzen, it is one of several developments of high rise apartment buildings in the area. One of the key features that "distinguish" Luna Park Houses from its neighbors are its fully fenced, open air hallways. Part of the problem is that this ominous super-block of towers looks more like a prison complex or mental institution, than a residential development. The other part is that it looms directly over a popular amusement park where people supposedly go to have fun. The buildings did receive a facade renovation in the 2010s where they went from the all orange bricks shown below to the red and yellow design you see in the image above. What do you think? Are the Luna Park Houses ugly?

I lived in Luna Park from 1962 until 1972.

The lobbies are no less institutional looking by the way. You won't see more sunlight in any New York apartment than you do in these though, which more than makes up for the fugly exteriors.
