With 15,372 residential units, in 35 high rise buildings clustered in groups of seven, Co-op City is the largest residential development in the United States. [1] It's located in a swampy area in the north east part of the Bronx. Built under the Mitchell-Lama affordable housing program, it was completed in 1973 and designed by architect, Herman Jessor. Like the Luna Park towers in Brooklyn, Co-op City also sits on the former site of an amusement park (Freedomland USA). [1] Being the massive tower-in-the-park complex that it is, it sits on 320 acres, but only 20% is developed [1], leaving lots of barren space like you see in the photo.
