375 Pearl St... also known as the Verizon Building. This eyesore is one of the first things that greet you as you enter Manhattan from the Brooklyn Bridge. Originally built in 1975 for the New York Telephone company, it has 32 stories and stands at approximately 540 feet (160 m). It was designed by Rose, Beaton & Rose. [1] Long considered by the press as one of the ugliest buildings in New York City, there was quite a bit of hullaballoo and excitement when it was announced that the building would undergo a $230 million renovation back in 2016. [2] The effort was led by landlord Sabey Data Center Properties and architecture firm CallisonRTKL. And they actually managed to make it worse. Here are the before and after pictures. It may have been a massive bunker before, but at least you could say it had a bit of a brutalist charm to it. Now it's just an awful mish-mash of different architectural styles and colors that don't really go together. What do you think? Take the poll and/or leave a comment below...
